Bob Jorgensen's Engine List

It is unknow exactly how many steam engines Bob Jorgensen constructed, however,
here is a list of Bob's known engines:

(Click on any photo to enlarge it.  Right-click "save picture as" to save
photos or drawings-for personal non-commercial educational use only.)

Hot Air Engines:

1. Vertical, inverted, 1-cylinder.
This engine was featured in "The Stirling Engine Manual", p. 63, by James Rizzo.

2. Single cylinder with fan blade.
This engine was featured in "Hot-Air Engines - Vol. 2", p.83, Lindsay Publications, Inc.

3. Single cylinder vertical with round-spoked flywheel, Ericsson type.
This engine was probably built from two articles, "Steam and Stirling Engines You Can Build", p.64,
and "The Stirling Engine Manual", p.123.

Steam Engines:

-1. Vertical twin-cylinder.
This engine is detailed with drawings in the book "Model Making", Raymond Francis Yates, 1925,
reprinted by Lindsay Publications, Inc.

2. Vertical inverted twin cylinder, "Bernay-1st copy".
This engine was featured in a print from Lindsay Publications, Inc., and was modeled by
Bob Jorgensen in the spring of 2005.  Bob described his work to determine the correct
geometry for the valve gear for this engine as one of his most challenging model undertakings.

Bob used a 6 1/8" long cylinder block for his model, which was somewhat of a random choice,
but probably more of a practical result since many of Bob's designs centered around the
2"x3" gray cast iron bar stock that seemed to become one of Bob's favorite sized building
blocks for his engines.
This bar stock can also be obtained in 2"x5" and 2"x6" sizes, with the front portion used for
either a separate or built-in steam chest.  The nominal outside dimensions of gray cast iron
bar stock is generally oversized slightly to allow final machined dimensions of exactly 2"x3"
(when using a 2"x3" bar).

A photo of Bob's pencil drawings for the Bernay are shown in photos here.

itself in a very short and compact design.

3. V-twin, "Davis Direct Connect".  This engine does not use the traditional crossheads.
This engine is featured in the public domain book "Modern Steam Engines: The Construction of
Modern Steam Engines" by
Rose, Joshua, M.E., Henry Carey Baird & Co., 1893.

A photo of Bob's pencil drawing for the "Davis" engine is shown here.

4. Semi-rotary, "Robertson's", twin square pistons in horseshoe shape.
This engine is featured in the public domain book "Modern Steam Engines: The Construction of
Modern Steam Engines" by
Rose, Joshua, M.E., Henry Carey Baird & Co., 1893.

-4a. (2nd copy of "Robertson's Semi-Rotary")
(Note the first copy of Engine No.4 has a flywheel with spokes, and
the second copy of Engine No.4 has a solid flywheel.)

5. The Dake engine, which has twin pistons shaped like slices of bread,
which move in a linear and also a rotary fashion,

Rotary "Dake" engine with square piston.
(Note: An entire page of photos and video links has been added for the
Dake engine.  See the PHOTOS III - DAKE tab on this website.)

boiler, water tank, and feed water pump.

8. Horizontal single-cylinder engine with single flywheel and wishbone connecting rod (red).

-8a. Same design as No.8 except black paint with grooved flywheel).

-9. Horizontal single-cylinder engine with twin flywheels, round crosshead and crosshead guide.
(Same design as No.7)

10. Horizontal single-cylinder engine with single wide flywheel and rectangular crosshead.

11. Horizontal single-cylinder engine with single flywheel, wood cylinder lagging, top mounted valve.

12. Horizontal single-cylinder engine with single flywheel, extra long-stroke mill type engine, wood insets in connecting rod, steam chest
above and unattached to cylinder.
This engine was featured in artlcle from Lindsay Publications, Inc., publication "American Machinist Magazine", March 24, 1906.

(Similar to a Stuart type design)

14. Vertical large single-cylinder engine, 4-column support, single flywheel, with twin eccentrics and reversing gear.
This engine is similar to engine shown on page 147 of "Model Making", Raymond Francis Yates, 1925, reprinted by Lindsay Publications, Inc.
